Trick or Treat

Rexford was really into Halloween this year. We went to visit Grandma the day before Halloween and he got treats there. Then we went over to church for the Trunk or Treat where he got some more candy. On Halloween, Aunt Lisa and Uncle Jason came to visit and brought treats and then we headed out for trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. I think he got candy from Aunt Shannon's bucket about ten times. He wanted to go to all the houses on the street and he was so excited about all the treats in his pumpkin. His pumpkin was totally full, I don't think we could have fit more candy in there! I think he likes to play with the candy more than eat it so that is good I guess. He just likes to carry his pumpkin around and look at all of his candy. The next morning he asked me if he could go get more treats. Austin slept through it all of course but would wake up and get mad when we put the hat on.

Bug Bites

So Rexford has bad reactions to insect bites. Last week it was mosquitos that made his leg swell up and look way bigger than his other leg. This week we're not sure what exactly bit his hand but it made it pretty puffy. I noticed the bites and put some cream on them but it wasn't until the next day that his whole hand became fat. After a day of Benadryl with no results, we went to the doctor who gave us some medicine for the swelling and an antibiotic since it looked a little infected. It looks much better today, the swelling is down and not so red. Not sure why bugs love him but we'll be more careful from now on!

This picture doesn't really show the swelling well, you could really tell from a side shot better. Anyway, it looked pretty ugly.

I gave Rexford Benadryl before his nap. He woke up and asked for Diego so I put it on for him. I went to finish feeding the baby and when I came out 15 minutes later, this is what I found.

Two Weeks Old Already

Austin is two weeks old today and already looking older to me. A couple of days ago I thought he looked bigger and older and less like a newborn. He's still little but he just looks a little different. He still sleeps a lot but is eating a little more and is awake and looking around a bit more too. He doesn't really cry much at all and doesn't mind when Rexford plays loudly around him :) I took him to the doctor for his two week appointment and he's much smaller than Rexford ever was, weighing in at 7 lbs. 12 oz. He was only 25th percentile for weight and height, something we're not used to! Brian was a little concerned but I'm sure he'll be just fine. Rexford was actually shorter than his hospital measurements too once his head returned to normal shape and look at him now! Anyway, he's doing well and we love to just look at him and watch his little face. Rexford is still in love with his little brother, wanting to give him lots of kisses and help us with him. I know he sometimes gets frustrated that I can't give him all my time but he's taking it well and is really sweet. He's grown up a bit too this past week, learning to get in and out of the bathtub by himself, pedal on his tricycle, and open doors. Here are the latest pictures of the boys :)

I Survived Shopping With Two Children

Thursday is our shopping day and we really needed to go so I decided to attempt it with two children. I probably wouldn't have gone but Brian was scheduled to be at school Thursday and Friday night so I knew he couldn't go until Saturday and that was too far away. Also Austin is sick with his first cold already and I needed to buy some saline drops for his poor little stuffy nose. It takes longer to get out the door now with two but we made it out a little before 10am and headed to the store. It takes a little planning now like finding a parking space near a stray shopping cart so I can put Rexford in the cart and then get Austin out of the car and put him in my sling. Surprisingly it went well! I know it could have been a disaster but Austin just sleeps all day right now so he slept through the whole shopping experience. He doesn't even care to eat that often so he's pretty easy so far. It is a little more difficult with two and a little more work but it wasn't bad and we finished our shopping in about an hour and headed home. As we drove home I looked back and noticed that Rexford had fallen asleep. He never falls asleep that early so he must have been tired! It was so cute, both my boys asleep in the backseat. Shopping is tiring I guess. After I got home, I fell asleep in the chair with Austin. Luckily my sister came over to play with Rexford and I was able to continue my nap in my bed :) So I survived shopping with two children and I actually went out to the store again today since I forgot a couple of things yesterday!

As he gets older I'll probably see this less and less. It's funny how little ones can just fall asleep wherever. I don't get to see him sleeping anymore since he sleeps in his own room in his crib. He slept with us for the first eight months and sometimes I miss that.

Austin slept the whole trip - notice the yucky junk in his poor little eyes from his cold :(

Pumpkin Projects

Rexford has been having lots of fun with pumpkins this week. Aunt Aly and Uncle Todd took Rexford to the pumpkin patch to pick out a big pumpkin to carve and a little pumpkin for him to paint. When he got there, he kept saying "wow, wow, pumpkins everywhere" and then he started walking around saying, "where are the little ones?" He helped Alyson pick out a giant pumpkin and he got a smaller one for himself.

He was very serious about painting his pumpkin. He used all the colors and was very careful with his strokes. He had this look of concentration on his face most of the time.

Rexford loved the pumpkin patch so much that Papa took him back another day to pick out a pumpkin for him. They brought it back to our house to carve it and to my surprise Rexford actually stuck his hand inside the pumpkin(for a brief moment) this year. He still thought it was yucky but liked the carving knife and wanted to help.

Fresh Air

The weather has been super nice lately so on Tuesday we ventured out for our first walk together! By the time we actually made it outside it was kind of warm but it was nice to get out anyway. Rexford and Austin both enjoyed the walk and I enjoyed getting out of the house for a little bit.

Just Me and the Boys

Brian went back to work on Monday so it was just me and the boys for the day. Actually Alyson and Todd came over to take Rexford to pick out pumpkins so they were there to help for awhile (Rexford's cute pumpkin pictures coming soon). Anyway, we had a pretty good day. Austin slept most of the day as usual so Rexford and I got to spend a little time together. We relaxed on the couch and snacked on some golden grahams, played with his toys, watched a couple of Diego episodes, and took some pictures and videos. Rexford really likes to take pictures so I let him take some of Austin. He gets so excited when he pushes the button on the camera and the picture appears on the little screen. I also took some pictures of them together and Rexford is still super sweet to his little brother. He wants to see him all the time and gives him lots of kisses.

Rexford loves to get close and watch Austin and then give him a kiss

Watching Diego together - Austin is very interested as you can tell

Rexford put on his safety glasses and got his hammer and told me that he was going to fix Austin's crib. He worked on it for awhile and then told me it was all fixed.

Welcome Austin!

We went to the hospital early Tuesday morning for our scheduled induction and luckily didn't have to wait long for a room this time. We got started and fortunately things went much faster this time around. We thought we'd probably be waiting all day but when the doctor came at lunch time we were half way there. Then they noticed that the baby's heart rate kept going up and down quickly so they thought something must be happening. They kept checking and we went from 5 cm to 10 cm pretty quickly. They called the doctor and he came over and little Austin was born at 4:01 pm. He was 7 lbs 9 oz and 21.25 inches long. They had to use the vacuum like with Rexford but although a little bit cone shaped, his head is fine. There is a bruise but he is healing quickly and it will be gone soon. Austin has more hair than Rexford and it is much darker. He seems much skinnier and smaller to me. We were so relieved that things went well and so happy to finally have him with us.

Rexford meeting Austin for the first time

It was hard to pick a name and we were finally able to narrow it down to three names. Then Brian decided to take a family poll so we texted/called everyone to take votes. Our votes counted the most in the end but I think Austin really did win the most votes even without our votes. I was going to spell it differently but in the end I decided to go with the traditional spelling.

Here's Austin all dressed and ready to go home

My doctor said I could leave the hospital Wednesday but the pediatrician wanted us to stay until Thursday so we did. They cleared us to leave on Thursday morning and then when we were checking out they did one last jaundice check and his levels were high. Then they did a blood test and we were stuck there for another couple of hours. The blood test results were barely under the level where we could take him home. So finally at 5:00 we got to go home! We had to visit his doctor today and his levels were higher again so now we have to do phototherapy at home. We lay him on this machine and wrap him in a special blanket and turn it on. He has to lay there pretty much all the time except when eating or changing his diaper. We go back tomorrow and hopefully his levels will go down.

We are so happy to be home even with the jaundice stuff :) Rexford was so excited to meet his baby brother and has been so sweet to him. He gives him hugs and kisses and wants to see him all the time. He talks about Austin or his baby brother all the time and helps me throw away diapers and get wipes. He doesn't like it when Austin is on the little machine and asks me to take him out. He tells me that he's all done with the lights. I'm hoping he continues to be excited about him because so far he's been really sweet. We've tried really hard to give him lots of love and attention too and it's been pretty easy since Austin wants to sleep all day for now!

Thanks for everyone's well wishes and comments. We're doing great and just enjoying spending time together. I know how fast Rexford grew so I'm trying to capture little Austin in pictures and videos and just enjoy him while he's so small.

Pre-Halloween Fun

Since I'm having a baby in 10 days I knew that I wouldn't be able to go to Sea World and do many Halloween activities after this weekend. So Brian and I took Rexford today for trick-or-treating fun. I put his costume on last night to try it on but he wouldn't wear it today at Sea World. I'm not sure why but it was kind of warm. Maybe I scared him when I showed him himself in the mirror last night? Who knows, but hopefully he'll wear it on Halloween. He makes great monkey noises so it's really cute. We had a fun time and Rexford was very excited about the candy in his pumpkin. He wants to carry the pumpkin around all the time now.

Bubbles

I found this fun little bubble toy at the toy store and picked it up for Rexford today. It was a big hit-he wanted to stay outside forever! Now that it is a little cooler outside we can get back to doing more fun outdoor things again.

He looks so tall and thin here-I can't believe my super chubby baby is this grown up

More Conversations With Rexford

Rexford: I love you Mommy (he comes up and puts his arms around my legs). We're best friends!

Kimberly: We are best friends, I love you too.

Rexford: I love my Daddy too. Daddy is my best friend too.

Kimberly: That's right, Mommy and Daddy love you. We're best friends.

Isn't he so sweet?! He tells us everyday he loves us all day and he's just really sweet. He's giving much better hugs and kisses now too.

This is what Rexford says every morning when he wakes up. I go in his room and he's standing in his crib calling me. When I walk in he says:

Rexford: Good morning Mommy. Can you open the blinds for me?

Kimberly: Good morning Rexford, of course I'll open the blinds for you.

Rexford: Mommy can you fix your hair? (If my hair is down he tells me this and I have to put it up)

Kimberly: Sure babe

Rexford: Mommy can you get me out? I need a new dry diaper.

He's so funny, he says all of this each morning and he's just so happy to see us. It's hard not to smile even when I'm still tired.

Coming Soon!

I had my last ultrasound today and they estimated that the baby was around 6 lbs. 14 oz. By the time I got home, my doctor had called to tell me that I am scheduled to have the baby on Tuesday, October 14th. So I guess that is the day! I have been getting really sad and worried about Rexford so I kind of like knowing a date to plan for. I don't really want to leave him all of a sudden without warning so this is better. We have lots of family around and I know he'll probably be just fine but I'm getting sad about leaving him overnight. I wish he could come stay with me. At least I can start planning now. I've got a long list of little things to do so I need to get going since the date is less than 2 weeks away! Here's a photo from today's ultrasound. He was very cramped in there and so it was really hard to see him. You can his face looking at you in the picture with his chubby little cheek and his eye. He's still doing well, we just don't want him to get too big :)
